The Seattle Times put a spotlight on Erin Stark, the fifth-grader who won the Community Education Center's 2013 Creative Writing Contest. From the article:

"'There’s just a lot more people than just a basic everyday American,' said Erin, of Bellevue.

"The stories she’s heard inspired a poem titled, 'What Would You Miss About Immigrants If They Didn’t Come to America?,' which she entered in a writing contest sponsored by the American Immigration Council. The contest invites fifth-graders to submit a writing entry based on the theme, 'Why I am Glad America is a Nation of Immigrants.'

"Erin’s poem won first place out of more than 5,000 entries. Her reward is an all-expenses-paid trip to San Francisco, where she will read her winning entry at the council’s annual benefit dinner on June 28."

The American Immigration Council is pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural 2012 “Change in Motion” Multimedia Contest. The competition challenges young adults to explore the role that immigration plays in their lives and communities.  The program allows young filmmakers and artists to create projects which focus on celebrating America as a nation of immigrants and explore the impact immigration has on our everyday lives.   The contest is sponsored, in part, by the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

When the top 10 winners of a Northern California creative-writing contest for fifth graders took the stage in San Francisco Wednesday night, three of them were from El Cerrito's Madera Elementary School.

The Northern California "Celebrate America Creative Writing Contest," now in its 10th year, challenged fifth graders to write essays or poems on the theme, "Why I Am Glad America Is a Nation of Immigrants."

Austin Texas "Celebrates America"

Austin winners of the local "Celebrate America" 5th Grade Creative Writing Contest were honored at a Naturalization Ceremony at Austin Delco Activity Center on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. The Contest winners were presented with their awards, and had the opportunity to read their winning entries in front of 984 new U.S. citizens from 105 different countries taking the oath of citizenship before District Judge Lee Yeakel.

District Director Sandra Heathman will introduce three award winning essay writers at an N-600 Oath Ceremony that will be attended by 20 new citizens. The fifth grade winners wrote an essay, sponsored by the American Immigration Council on the theme, “Why I am Glad America is a Country of Immigrants.” The winners will read their winning essays. The new citizens have already had their N-600 Application for Certificate of Citizenship granted, and will obtain their Certificates.

Fifty people from 30 countries are celebrating their citizenship after a naturalization ceremony.  As part of the ceremony a Westerville, Ohio student won a statewide essay contest.  The state of Ohio submitted over 1,600 entries to the American Immigration Council's 14th Annual "Celebrate America"  Creative Writing Contest.
