IPC Responds to FAIR Report [18]

This week, Fox News is reporting on data provided to them by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) which amounts to a highly misleading fiscal snapshot of the costs allegedly imposed on U.S. taxpayers by unauthorized immigrants. However, in its rush to portray unauthorized immigrants as nothing more than a drain on the public treasury, FAIR completely discounts the economic contributions of unauthorized workers and consumers. Immigrants and their children are growing shares of West Virginia’s population.

The foreign-born share of West Virginia’s population rose from 0.9% in 1990 [35], to 1.1% in 2000 [35], to 1.3% in 2008 [36], according to the U.S. Census Bureau. West Virginia was home to 23,273 immigrants in 2008 [36].

45.6% of immigrants (or 10,618 people) in West Virginia were naturalized U.S. citizens in 2008 [36]—meaning that they are eligible to vote.
