IPC Data on Texas DREAMers Cited in The Dallas Morning News

The Dallas Morning News recently cited data from the IPC's report "Who and Where the DREAMers Are, Revised Estimates". The article, titled "Bipartisan Group Announces $25 Million Scholarship Fund for Undocumented Students", covered the unveiling of a scholarship fund for undocumented students by San Antonio Democratic activist Henry Muñoz III, former Washington Post CEO Donald E. Graham, and Carlos Gutierrez, a Commerce Secretary under President George W. Bush

"1,000 high-achieving undocumented students will each receive a $25,000 scholarship from the initiative, called TheDream.US. The effort has been funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Inter-American Development Bank, the Graham family, and other philanthropies. Some of that scholarship money will go to students in Texas.

'In the state of Texas, we live with this every day,” said Muñoz, who serves as national finance chairman for the Democratic Party. 'You’re probably living down the street from someone who is a dreamer and you don’t even know it. They’re are neighbors, they’re the people who work with us.'

Texas has nearly 300,000 dreamers, according to estimates from the American Immigration Council."

Cover letter dated Oct, 19, 2012 from Catrina M. Pavlik-Keenan, FOIA Officer, ICE to Michael Wishnie, Director of the Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization at Yale Law School. The letter states that ICE continues to take the position that the request is insufficiently defined and imposes an unreasonable burden on ICE. Notwithstanding ICE’s position and the fact that the lawsuit is the subject of litigation, ICE is providing the results of a two-hour search of the ICE Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations for records responsive to the FOIA request. The search, conducted in conjunction with the preparation of the Declaration of Jamison Matuszewski, produced 473 responsive pages of documents, of which 303 were released in full. The responsive portions of the remaining pages were withheld pursuant to FOIA exemptions 5, 6, 7(C) and (E).

President Declares Ongoing Commitment to Immigration Reform

Washington D.C. - In the State of the Union Address this evening President Obama made clear his ongoing commitment to immigration reform noting "we should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system - to secure our borders, enforce our laws, and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation." Some may continue to argue that immigration reform is too politically risky to move on this year and that we should focus instead on rebuilding our economy. However, comprehensive immigration reform is compatible with economic reform as it would generate needed economic growth, create jobs and increase tax contributions by ensuring that everyone working in the United States is doing so legally. In fact, immigration reform would allow us to take full advantage of the opportunities for economic growth that immigrants bring.

LAC Seeks Greater Safeguards in Removal Proceedings for Immigrants with Mental Disabilities

Earlier this week, the American Immigration Council's Legal Action Center (LAC), the American Immigration Lawyers Association, and the Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center filed an amicus brief with the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) urging the government to protect the rights of immigrants whose mental disabilities prevent them from participating meaningfully in their own removal hearings. "This is particularly disturbing given that these immigrants are not granted court-appointed counsel in removal proceedings" said Melissa Crow, Director of the Legal Action Center.
