Systemic ReformsThe LAC has a strong track record of litigating to fix long-standing problems with our broken immigration system. Through our class action and other litigation, we have convinced the courts of appeals to overturn government policies that prevented an entire class of noncitizens from applying for lawful residency; that precluded individuals from presenting evidence to immigration judges in deportation cases; and that delayed for years permanent resident status for thousands of individuals who had been granted asylum. The LAC coordinates its litigation with immigration advocates nationwide and facilitates strategic planning and collaboration among immigration litigators.Read more...

Mary Giovagnoli, the Director of the Immigration Policy Center, was quoted in a recent article in the Chicago Sun-Times on Senator John Cornyn's proposed border amendments in the Senate immigration bill:

"Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) wants to halt the legalization of undocumented immigrants after a required 10-year wait if border security fails to meet potentially unattainable standards.

"He might as well say he is against immigration reform. His plan would effectively kill it, which is why some, including Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), have called his proposal a poison pill.

“'It becomes a way to say we can’t move forward,' said Mary Giovagnoli, director of the Washington, D.C.-based Immigration Policy Center."

Natasha Iskander, Assistant Professor of Public Policy at New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service, conducts research on labor migration and its relationship to economic development; labor mobilization and its relationship to workforce development; and processes of institutional innovation and organizational learning. Her work examines how the dislocations caused by migration provide opportunities for knowledge creation and economic development.

Undocumented Immigration Stunts in Face of Economy

Washington, DC- A new study from the Pew Hispanic Center shows the number of undocumented immigrants coming to the United States did not increase between 2007 and 2008, and may have fallen by several hundred thousand. Researchers have found, again and again, that immigration slows in the face of a sluggish U.S. economy.

Jack Strauss, Ph.D.

Professor Jack Strauss is the Simon Chair of Economics at Saint Louis University and Director of the Simon Center for Regional Forecasting. He is currently an adviser to the St. Louis Steering Committee on Immigration. The taskforce, backed by both Mayor Slay and County Executive Dooley, is exploring avenues to promote a more proactive and friendly immigration policy in the St. Louis region. Dr. Strauss was the keynote speaker at the conference that kick-started the immigration taskforce, and his paper has shown that immigration can produce significant positive economic effects to the St. Louis region. He is the author of more than three dozen refereed articles in economics in top journals.
